An excerpt from one of my newer works.
As Emily drove, as she could think about was the past. Had the passing years, all been lived in vain? Was this the way that it was meant to be? She had been thinking, more often about the past, over the course of the last few months. She looked into the mirror. Little Erin, was sleeping in the back seat. She was the light of Emily’s life. The one thing that kept her going each day. Erin was a reminder of the good in the world, even when Emily was filled with thoughts of her past, and the things that she viewed as mistakes.
In recent months, she had become haunted by the past. Everything seemed to be a ghost from the days of her youth. From a life that she had left behind years earlier. And the person that she had been so many years before. More than seven years had passed from what she recalled to be the best days of her life. Days that she knew would never come again.
A lot had changed since then. She had been married for the majority of the years, and now that too was at an end. When she was young, she had thought that marriage was meant to be “ ‘til death do us part”. However, that concept was gone from her mind. The man that she had spent so much time with and now had a child, had found someone new.
As a result, she had packed everything that she thought she and Erin would need, and headed back to her parents home. It was a long drive, taking the better part of a day to get there. Even though, it wasn’t the only place that she had to go, it was the only place that she wanted to be. It had been a long time since Emily had been there. Still, she knew the way to what had once been her parents home. Now it was only occupied by her father. And one other.
In part, she missed her mother, whose passing had occurred a couple of years earlier. Emily had been unable to attend the funeral. Part of her, had not wanted to do so. In a way, she still resented her mother. Even had blamed her in the recent months for the way that her life had turned out. It was her mother that had talked her into leaving behind all that she had wanted. As a result, she had gotten married, to a man that had now left her for some other.
The only thing that she could do, was to start anew. Go back to where she had been, and find a new road to walk down. For her, she was returning to square one. The place where everything began.
