I dedicate this short story to all women everywhere who are easy marks for evil men.

What is time? We measure time in seconds, minutes, hours, days, week’s months, and years but just what does it all mean? God says “A day is like unto a thousand years.” It was once believed that our elders were beheld as the wise ones of society. Today they are thought of as old, senile, sickly and insignificant. It was once believed that men were responsible caretakers of their homes, families and businesses now men are viewed as predators, abusers, selfish and unworthy of the honor God has bestowed upon them. Yet each individual person is different even if in some ways similar.

So what is age? It is a measurement of time in years used from birth to passing, but does it tell you who is wise? Mature? Responsible? Etc. Some would say those things come with experience, yet there are those who never learn from their own mistakes much less someone else’s. Many say women mature faster than men while others say it’s the surroundings in which one grows up in. Yet all of these things do play a part in the make up of individual people, but the deciding factor inevitably is each individual’s perceptions of their individual roll models and of themselves.

The sky has just begun to show color as the sun began its assent into the sky bringing in a new day. The Joshua Trees appeared as stilted sentinels through out the dry arid land of the California Desert threatening and foreboding, lying in wait for the unsuspecting. Birds could be heard waking up to begin their preparations for the new day while an owl screeched in the distance as it headed off to it’s nest to rest. Coyotes silently walked the lands looking for their next meal as Jack Rabbits scurried around to find play mates for the day’s fun. Kangaroo rats played under the Greasewoods while the wild bees set out to find honey from the wild flowers.

Yvette, a typical American woman in her late forties, five foot six, brown shoulder length hair, brown eyes not quite almond shaped but not big and round either, over weight from having birthed five children and three miscarriages sat at her meager dinning table in her trailer as she watched the sun rise, sipping a freshly made cup of coffee. The sands of the desert like the sands of time reminded her of her past accomplishments and heartbreaks, knowing the people around will talk trash about her, smiles as she peers down the short hall of her twenty six foot trailer.
