Boy scouts and men had knives we always carried, mostly small "pocket knives" for triming a fingernail or to make yourself a tooth pickor many other small jobs that required a quick fix. When I was a Scout it was required that we have a knife as part of our equipment. My dad got me my first knife and it was a Boy Scout Knife in 1944 while he was working at Mare Island Naval Shipyard.
Boy Scout knives were made because the scouts needed more than a single bladed knife. They needed some utility along with a cutting edge.
There are different manufactures of the item called a Boy Scout knife, some had two blades, a screw driver, a cork screw, a leather punch and possibly other variations of extras depending on who made the knife.
Most of the major knife companies made some version of the boy scout knife, it was a good market to be in and they all made money making and selling them.—some of the brand names were: Camillus- a three blade with a bone handle that still sells for about $35.00, Case world famous knife maker of all kinds of knives. Remington had several popular models. Schrade has been in the knife business for many years, makes many kinds of pocket knives and hunting knives. Swiss Army makes a knife with many tools on it, like scissors and cork screws and 2 kinds of screwdrivers, some even had a fork and spoon built-in.
Kabar – ka- bar another old brand that makes exceptional knives, Kamp King – imperial not as well know n but still a good knife, Kutmaster another brand, and Ulster that made a 5 bladed knife. Some also made a sheath Boy Scout knife, and some also had a combo knife with fork and spoon. If you wanted a bone handle it would cost you about 1/3 more for that.
The American culture is oriented to weapons of all kinds and we are taught to use them properly. Therefore, it is with the Boy Scout knife, knives were first weapons, and then have gradually changed to utility. My dad taught me how to whittle and make things out of wood, and to use knives properly so I would not cut myself. Ex: of Scout Knifwe pictured.
