A teenage girl was beaten on a bus platform as security guards watched – What happened to just doing the right thing?
According to an ABC news report, a fifteen-year-old girl was brutally beaten while security guards looked on and did nothing to help her. A surveillance video has been released where it can be clearly seen that the girl was taken to the ground and beaten harshly while the three platform security guards stood near the dispute and made no actions to intervene.
The teenage girl was robbed of her things, but experienced no serious injuries. However, this incident caused some outrage as it isn’t understood why the security didn’t directly stop the attacks. According to the article, the police spokesman stated that the guards at the Seattle bus platform had been trained not to physically get involved in any fight or dispute as they are unarmed civilian guards and to instead call 911 (which they did).
In spite of this training, it raises the question: What happened to just doing the right thing? Three grown men stood and watched as a fifteen-year-old girl was being beaten and robbed by other teenage girls. Even moreso, the numerous passersby also stood and watched or passed by without any attempts at help. While the case is still being investigated and statements have been made by the police department, the situation makes people wonder if somebody would help them if they were in need. If three guards did nothing to help a teenage girl from being beaten, and the people passing by made no efforts to intervene either, what does that say about our society and how safe should we feel?
