“Wake up, Kara! It’s your big day!” said Kara’s mom, Sue
“Six more minutes…” Kara said, pulling the heavy quilt over her head. Her black hair stuck out in every direction.
“Six?” her mom asked with a puzzled look on her face.
“Yeah, six!” Kara nearly screamed, finally uncovering her face. “And what are you talking about, my ‘big day’? It’s not my birthday… or Christmas, so leave me alone and let me sleep.”
“You think I meant a holiday?” she said,” You really are brain-dead in the morning, aren’t you? I can’t believe you really don’t remember… Sometime, you just…” she started muttering things to herself. “Anyway, what I was saying was that today is your signing.”
Kara jumped up and ran to her closet, “No way! I can’t believe I forgot either! What time is it? When is Spencer gonna be her
“Calm down, Kara. It’s only ten, the ceremony doesn’t start for two hours. Knowing Spencer, he’ll probably be here in about an hour.” Sue smiled, “And, I’ll help you find something to wear.” She looked around her daughter’s tiny room. They lived in a small cabin that was located in a small‘camp’. It was kind of like a town, but really small.
Kara plopped down on her mattress, “Thanks, mom. I’m just going crazy. I can’t believe today is actually my signing…” Most everyone who lived in Feredein, the kingdom their small town was in, had a signing. Signings were when a group of sprent, teenagers, got together in the town square of grand hall. They got assigned a type. The type was either rogue, archer, mage, warrior, or novice. Novice was the most uncommon because it meant that the sprent wasn’t ready to take on a real title, and had to go back to just training. Anyway, after they are assigned a type they are taken to the Academy. The Academy was located in the center of Feredein. There, they taught the sprent the skills that were associated with their type.
“What do you think I’ll be?” Kara asked her mom. Sue was one of very few that had never passed a signing. She had always been named a novice.
“Well, you know I can’t answer that, but just know that whatever you are, rogue, warrior, mage, or archer, I will always except it… and you.”
“What if I’m a novice?” Kara asked quietly.
“You won’t be, I can feel it.” Sue was holding back her tears.
“How do you know?”
“I just do.” Sue said simply. “Now, what are you gonna wear…” They both laughed a little. They started rummaging through Kara’s closet. Any nice piece of clothing she had, had been made by Sue, or it was something Kara had found in a deserted market wagon.
“Oh, this one’s pretty!” Kara said, holding up a purple dress.
“It is… but it’s not really your color.” Sue said sadly.
“You’re right.” Kara said as she put the dress back in her small closet. After a few more minuted of searching, Kara turned to her mother, holding up a beautiful dress. “This is it. This is the perfect dress.”
