This short story by Conviron Altati talks about a hedonistic lady’s view in life.
Miss Farah Farrell indulges in different activities, which for her, are the best means of achieving maximum happiness. Her parents does not approve of her spending almost all of her time and money on partying with either friends and acquaintances or strangers. She justifies it by claiming that she is perfectly happy with what she is doing. Moreover, she believes that she is not depriving others of their happiness so there is nothing wrong with her pursuit for perfect pleasure.
Farah is just one of the firm believers in the philosophy that pleasure is the ultimate goal of human existence. Most people justify the righteousness of an action basing on its goodness. However, hedonists like Farah, think differently. To them, the righteousness of an action depends on the pleasure gained more than the pain.
If the society is filled with hedonists, how sure are we that pleasure can be pursued by the majority? How can the majority be satisfied without depriving others? What if everyone pursues the sadistic satisfaction of inflicting pain to others?
Let us consider if hedonism is justified by the pursuit for pleasure. In such a chaotic case, the criminals, who enjoy being such because of its pleasure, are also justified. Miss Farah Farrell, for sure, will never find the peak of pleasure. After all, man is insatiable in nature.
