How tough it is not to snatch loss from the jaws of victory!!
The T20 final was getting excited with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) cruising towards victory. But then there’s no written destiny, we write it on our own. Deccan Chargers Hyderabad (DCH) had decided to write their own destiny.
With RCB needing 30 runs off 18 balls with 4 wickets in hand, Gilchrist called on his strike bowler RP Singh “Maite, dig him two short eye level bouncers…and then york him with the 3rd one…that should do for Ross”!
Ross Taylor missed the first bouncer…Rahul Dravid at the non-strikers end, sighed.
The second one was another classic one…just missed Ross’s eyes…Rahul moans at the other end.
Ross then takes two steps back, stands deep inside the crease anticipating a third bouncer.
RP Singh bowls a fuller one, sticking to the plan and has Ross plumb in front…out leg before wicket (LBW) and at the other end, Rahul is a sight to watch.
In walked Robin Uthappa, the man who had dropped more catches than the runs scored off his bat. Rahul Dravid walks to him, “hey dosa (Ooothappa is a type of pancake – dosa, you get in Bangalore), 30 runs of 15 balls maga…strike a single and let the wall handle it!”
First delivery that Robin faces, he places his front foot forward with the bat well beside it and the ball hits the middle.
Rahul fumes “Perfect forward defence dude, but this ain’t test match…look out for runs, find the gaps!!!”
Finally off the last ball of that over, Robin manages to get a single. He didnt even dare to look at Rahul, but “It’s already getting late. Over and above, this….” Rahul sulks. Rahul rarely reacted but when he did, he sulked big time!
Remaining unbeated till the end, Robin Uthappa went on to snatch a loss from the jaws of victory, much to Rahul’s dismay.
DCH had written history without lifting a pen, so to say.
