Short story that tells the tale of the one witness that could possibly help to end the killing spree of the notorious Jack the Ripper.
Standing in the alley’s shadow, I watched in silent horror as the man viciously slaughtered the old woman, Long Liz Stride. Oh why hadn’t she done as them police-men had said and stayed in? They told us that it wasn’t safe to turn tricks, what with that Ripper fellow on the loose. But not Liz. Nothing could stop her from whorin’ at any time. So when I saw her take off with that fellow in the nice suit I followed.
They called him Jack the Ripper from what I done heard. He’s already killed other women, too. Torn them apart bad. Sayin’ they think he’s a doctor, what from the way he sliced up them women. And now he’s got Lizzie! Oh why hadn’t she listened!
Oh why can’t I scream? Oh dear lord, I’m paralyzed! I can’t move! I can’t even close my eyes! I’m so sorry, Lizzie! Please, somebody help her! Help me!
Wait! What’s that sound? A horse and cart! Maybe the driver will help. The Ripper’s stopped; he hears the horses, too. No! He’s coming this way! I have to hide fast. Somewhere he won’t see me. There! That door over there. I’ll go in there! It’s open a little bit, I can get in. I just pray I’m safe in here.
I can hear his footfalls on the street now. He’s runnin’ by real fast. He must be worried he’ll be seen. I wish I had seen his face. All I can do is tell them detectives I saw him slice up poor Liz Stride. They prob’ly won’t even believe me. No! I have to make them believe! Even if I am just a street girl.
He’s gone! I hope. Now I can get out of here and go get some help. Maybe I should find another way out, though. The alley may not be safe now. All I have to do is feel my way around and I’ll be out of here in a few shakes. At least there’s a little light in here, it’ll be a bit easier to get out.
Wait. What’s that snapping sound I just heard? It sounded like it came from above me. Oh God no! That big wood beam is falling! I have to move before it falls! I can’t let Lizzie down! I have to move!
The Ripper has to be stopped before…….
