“Why aren’t you in school,” said Erin’s mother as she spotted her daughter playing in the park with a group of her friends. It was a Wednesday afternoon, and was about seventy degrees outside. A perfect day to be skipping school for a nice day in the park.

“Well,” said Erin, “I’m not really skipping school, mom! Its only French class, and who needs French?” With that, Erin and her friends ran off since there was only fifteen minutes until they had to get back for math class. Mr. Richter is never happy about people being late to his class, and worse yet, skipping it, so Erin and her friends always make it back in time for him.

Erin’s mother, now furious and dangerous, ran home and immediately called the school to notify them of Erin and her friend’s skipping school. She would normally have dealt with this on her own, but since she ran off, she was ready to beat her into submission.

As the girls walked into the school, the principal and 4 security guards were standing on the sides of the doors waiting for their arrival. As they entered, the guards asked them where they had been, and they quickly responded with “getting some fresh air.” The guards knew this was a lie, and told them about Erin’s mother’s phone call. When the girls heard this they dashed down the hallway, and out the back exit of the school. They were now outlaws…

Poor Erin and company were stranded in the outside world, with no education or parenting to help them make wise decisions. They were all on their own now, however, at that moment, the crew seemed to be okay with that thought. They thought of all the awesome stuff they could do now that they didn’t have to go to school. What they didn’t realize is that they would soon be getting hungry, it would be getting dark, and they would want to go home and have a nice hot dinner.

Until that time though, they were all having a dandy time playing in the woods. They were chasing squirrels and talking about this and that. School was soon let out and they met all of their other friends. They got to talking and decided that it would be fun to boycott school because of all the homework you get. They were discussing the amount of homework they had to do and it added up to about, on average, three hours a day of after school work. Erin’s friend had to write an essay, study for two tests, read a chapter in a book, take notes on the chapter, do three sections in his Spanish book, and practice his algebra so he wouldn’t fall behind.  He also had a cross country meet so he got home at 6:30 pm. With three hours of homework, he would be working until at least 9:30, plus dinner and a shower, making the time approximately 10:30. The day starts at 5:30 in the morning so he then has to go to sleep, leaving no time for anything recreational. Erin and her friends don’t like days like that, and they happen all the time, so they want to put a stop to it.

They were planning a way to boycott, and started creating signs. They were working until about 5:00, when they realized they were going to need many more people than just the few they had. They started sending around a sheet that people could sign that said they would participate in the boycott of schooling, and in some way, change it for the better. They did this for about two hours making it seven. They got hungry and decided to continue with this project at a later date, probably some time next week.
