Taking a look into the true sense of citylife.

Image via Wikipedia

A thought that has been playing around in my mind lately is something that anyone should find rather disturbing.

Living in a city you learn to keep to yourself, your business is your business while others is theirs and that is just fine,it is almost like the rules of the game, and being a law abiding citizen you stick to those rules.

However; what happens if you are relaxing some evening, laid out on your sofa watching a movie and you hear a girl/woman running by screaming. Now automatically it will make you think, probably just a kid having a laugh or some drunken woman going by screaming at her spouse. Two very easy thoughts to entertain and the most likely thoughts to enter your mind, however; what about the possibility that the woman is screaming because she actually does need help?

Do you peek out the window to find out, fully prepared to help her if she needs it or do you even bother, being so accustomed to city life that you shove it off with the first thoughts that came to mind.

The disturbing part is what if she is actually screaming for help and you did nothing because you just cannot be bothered to check, after all you do live in a city where a lot of people live, work and play and it is easier to ignore this incident so you simply chop up as another daily occurrence in the life of a city, one that is void from your mind until you read about a girl that got raped and coincidently it just happened to be right next to the street you live on.

Wow. I cannot abide living in the city. Now, your article makes me wonder if I\’m shirking some sort of fellow-man duty by living far away from the shrieking ladies. I would see if she needed assistance…it\’s an ingrained reporter thing…nosiness…not gallantry.

I experienced that dilemma too, before. You never will know what is true or not just by judging what you see. Like the case of the woman who got beaten by a robber, who acted as if he’s the wife-beating husband. City life makes people insensitive. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing this – a thought provoking piece, It makes me wanna live again in rural areas..^_^, I agree with Patrick – city life makes people insensitive.. It’s a thing said – “who cares?”

I live in a rural area so it’s not my business. LOL I guess we have to peek out at times to see what’s really going on. Another thought, City dwellers are too busy to scream around for fun.

I ever heard screaming of man and woman, but I don’t know the voice came from which unit when I looked through the window, my neighbour said the same couple quarrelling inside their home

Good piece, I do live in the city so I do understand what you are talking about. This does happen from time to time in my area, I guess in a way that is a sad thing to say but it true. It puts you between a rock and hard place, you really have to make a hard decision. Sometimes it is nothing more than someone being drunk and acting like an idiot. This is one of the reasons why my family and I are moving back to the country, far from everyone!

I remember walking home from work one day, and seeing a large gang of lads surrounding another bloke on the floor. They were giving him a good kicking from what I could see. Did I do anything? No. Self preservation kicks in and I walked on by. This was in the early evening, in good summer light and in an exposed pub car-park next to a busy road. I called the police the next morning and offered a statement. I was told that they had been inundated with eye-witness reports. I guess no-one bothered to step in. The next day, I read in the paper that this man had died from his injuries.

It’s something to think about, and I like to think I would call 911 but as you say, if we called 911 everytime we heard an outcry, they would probably stop coming out to check and most of the time it’s just some fool shouting. I know I would call if it sounded like a cry for help.

Very good article. I am from the city and I hear screaming all of the time but this made me really think. Keep it up!

The City can be a scary at times, and you’ve just nailed that point.

Very well written article, 2 thumbs up!

Sometimes we don’t get involved for fear of retaliation especially if the perpetrator knows where you stay.

Well written food for thought in a modern world that needs to be reminded “We are our brother’s keeper” or our society is a flimsy excuse for pretending to be civilized.

I guess that is the downside to living in the city, eh? It is probable that someone might see or hear her though … I would hope. I can see what you mean. So, living within a more populated area does not seem to keep your safer, but rather make room for more causualties …..
