A fictional story about the two great world powers, facing off in the cosmos in the first battle to start, which would soon lead to post apocalypse age…

Space wars: The beginning of the end

High up in orbit over Earth, a battle of consequence was about to commence.  Two ships neared each other, one a frigate, the other, a heavy cruiser.

The frigate was USS Arizona, a heavy frigate of the United States Navy (USN) which was armed with some “experimental” weaponry.  The heavy cruiser was the venerable SNS Lenin of the Soviet Navy (SN).  Heavily armed with its massive conventional weapons.  The stage was set for Earth’s first high orbit engagement.

The two ships neared each other.  At maximum range, the bigger of the two ships unleashed its broadside barrage of rail gun fire, hurling 200 25 ton solid steel projectiles at the smaller.  The shots rocketed through space at Mach 8.

However, the SNS Lenin had made a terrible mistake, the last it would ever make.  It had chosen to pick on an “experimental” USN ship, one that was armed with the traditional rail guns, but the ammunition had a core of 10lbs of antimatter, enough to whip out several large cities on Earth’s surface.

Turning broadside, the USS Arizona brought 4 of its 8 rail guns to bear, launching 26 ton projectiles (add in the 10lbs of antimatter) at the SNS Lenin.

Both ships took evasive action.

It was an amazing sight, to see the projectiles rocket past one another in mid flight.

Due to the nimbleness of the frigate paid off with half of the Soviet made shots missing, three quarters of the remainder collided in flight just before the ship.  That left just 25.

The shots impacted against the haul of the ship, tearing through its 2 meters of titanium and ceramics.  On impact, the ceramics blew outward with high pressure in an attempt to slow the projectiles.  It had little affected.  The shots tore through the titanium.  They pushed through the heavy armor and exited on the other end, exposing the whole ship to cold, hard, vacuum.  Little figures could be seen in space, sucked out by the sudden change in pressure.  The ship split into two pieces.  Devoid of life, they floated in opposite directions.

Now, the four shots that rocketed towards the Soviet ship impacted on the cruisers 5 meters of titanium armor.  The timers on the projectiles were set off, counting down a minute.  The projectiles lacked the brute force necessary to push through the thick armor.  The stuck to the hull, managing to pierce just 1 meter of armor, like accessories.

A cheer went up from the soviet crew, all of whom felt that they had just scored a great victory against the imperial West.  All of them didn’t realize just how short their lives really were.

Four bright suns appeared in mid space for just a split second, bloating out the sun.  When they cooled, nothing, not even scrap metal from the Soviet ship, was left.  All had been vaporized.  Only the USN ship remained.

The battle lasted for just 1.2 minutes.

There were no survivors from either side.
