A short story, called Space Zoo.
“Deal” replied Tim.
They waited until dark and all the visitors had gone.
“Ready?” questioned Jack.
“Ready as I’ll ever be” replied Tim.
They crept to the edge of their enclosure. “Duck” whispered jack. They both his behind some bushes as a giant search light scanned their pen. It noticed that the two new animals were not there. The alien controlling the light presses a red button beside him.
‘Bee bar, bee bar’ went the siren. Flashing red lights were lit up everywhere. Other animals were startled by this noise. They stomped and gargled and blotted as loud as they could but it did not drown out the monstrous roar of the sirens.
“I’m scared” cried Tim and when he saw an alien coming into their pen he fainted. Jack grabbed Tim up, stepped over the fence and ran. He ran like he was being chased by a killer alien; well, he was. He zoomed past Gogles, Netaches, Bolongalongs and many more interesting alien species. But all that mattered now was getting to the pleasant safety of their own home on Earth.
Jack managed to outrun the alien that was chasing him but another one appeared straight in front of him. He dodged left before the two lethal hands grabbed him and his brother. He darted this way and that until he saw a sign saying “Exit”. He lugged Tim over the exit door and then clambered over himself.
He picked up Tim who was groaning from the sudden fall and looked around. He found himself in the zoo’s car park. Most of it was empty but there were one or two vehicles still there. He heard the guards’ loud voices and they were getting louder. He broke into a nearby car and set off. He pressed hard on the pedal. Suddenly, the wheels disappeared. “Oh no!” he muttered but little did he know that this was a hover car. It sped off into the sky, leaving the danger behind him.
He sped past buildings, trees and many more weird alien things he did not know the name of. He looked at a huge sign floating in the air. It said “Wormhole Junction 500cm”. Jack thought it was weird to put 500 centimetres but he was more concerned with how they were going to get home. He raced towards a sign that said Earth. It didn’t look like Earth it looked like a long tube that spiralled into the distance. “Well it’s worth a try” he said to himself.
He flew into the tube at full speed. ZOOM. . . He found himself floating in the car above Earth. “Home Sweet Home” he said and advanced straight home which took longer than he expected. When they got home Jack woke Tim up and brought him inside their home.
“It’s 5 o’clock!” exclaimed Tim, “and we were there for ages!”
“Hey Mum and Dad won’t be back for another half an hour, how about another game of chess?”
“Check mate” moaned Tim.
