After having been responsible with growing his garden, his mama thought now was a good time for him to learn how to take care of a pet. So she took Squirt to the pet store, and they set about to pick out a beta fish. Since beta’s are easy to care for, it shouldn’t be all that hard for him to care for it. Of course Slater was with them, and he too wanted a beta fish, but his mama wasn’t a fish person. Squirt’s mama said he could keep it in Squirt’s room if Slater’s mama was okay with it. Sure enough Slater’s mama said he could, and so the boys both got one male beta each.

    They got home and Squirt’s mama helped them to set up their fishes’s new home. Squirt’s fish is orange and had dark orange for his fins. His name is Tigger and he had dark blue gravel for the bottom of his bowl. A palm tree and a castle was in the bowl. Slater’s beta is a male but his name is Fighter. Fighter is blue with a black head. In his fish bowl, the plants are like coral and the gravel is red. Fighter also has a turtle hideaway. Squirt and Slater placed their beta’s side by side so they could see one another. Squirt’s mama said they had to learn how much and how often the fish would eat.

    The boys loved coming home after school and watch their fish “attack one another”. Tigger wasn’t much of an eater but Fighter would eat whenever food he had the chance. The boys learned how to clean the bowls and watched to see if they were sick. They also learned that they could “pet” the fish when they came up for air. In the future the boys look forward to getting a bigger fish tank and more fish.
