It was a weekday, in the evening. I had an Advanced class of ESOL learners (English for Speakers of Other Languages) It was Exam time. They had just finished sitting an online reading exam with City & Guilds in the Computer Training room and all headed back to the classroom nervously, to await the dreaded results.

I had conducted a Mock Exam with them prior to that, so it wasn’t new, except that obviously the questions were different. It took about 45 mins to an hour. As they waited in the next room, I went online to get the results and printed out every result separately. I finished printing them and walked into the class room feeling their eyes on me – about 15 learners.
I usually smile a lot and there is always a nice, warm atmosphere in class but as I stood infront of the glass, I didn’t look happy at all. It was a pensive look as I reminded them that we had done an Exam Practice and I didn’t understand the results. I asked if they got the questions mixed up. They looked concerned and some were beginning to look downcast.
Anyway, I said “you will have to retake this Exam again” and then proceeded to give every one a print-out of their results. As I started handing them out, after a few seconds, there were screams in the classroom, but they were screams of delight. Everyone looked round, with a big smile on their face and there were some shouts of “Oh my God Elena”. There was a lot of laughter in the class.
Needless to say, they all passed the Exam in flying colours.
Ps: No students had a heart attack.
