A recent survey of the butterfly Wayanad Forest Division North-organized by the Society of Naturalists of ferns, an environmental organization, and Forestry and Wildlife reported the observation of 140 species, including 17 who had not now been reported in the region.

A recent survey of the butterfly Wayanad Forest Division North-organized by the Society of Naturalists of ferns, an environmental organization, and Forestry and Wildlife reported the observation of 140 species, including 17 who had not now been reported in the region.

The three-day survey was conducted in three locations in the division and Kunjome Makkimala Brahmagiri.

Four researchers, V.C. Balakrishnan, Padman karaya, GayathriSasi, and Vinayan PA, and 40 students of the Department of Wildlife Biology, AVC College, Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu,Wildlife Center of Biology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine,Pookode, Department of Zoology applied, Kannur University, Department of Zoology, Mary Matha College, Mananthavadi, and the Faculty of Forestry, Mannuthy participated in the survey.

The team reported 38 species of patterns, the blues of 14 species, 15 species of swallow-tails, white and yellow 18, and 55 species of butterflies Sudheesh foot brush, coordinator of the survey.


Rare species such as yellow beak and Jack Sailer club were seen in the forest reserves Thirunelly. Species such as orangeAwlet, Nilgiri and Malabar Lacewing Tamil Tiger swallowtail bands were seen in the reserve forest Periya, Brahmagiri hills,Hill dale Kunjome forest reserve and forest.
The observation of 140 species of butterflies is evidence of healthy butterfly habitat in the region, VC Balakrishnan of the Society for Environmental Education in Kerala (SEEK), said.

The new species in the area included Black-Veign sergeant Dark Pierrot, Nilgiri Tiger, Thinking Blue Demon common band and the yellow-Jack Sailer said.
