A short story about the feelings of freedom.
Leif woke up the next morning groggy and worn out. His first night had been tough, and he did not sleep much. Leif was alert; eyes open wide like the moon, whenever the slightest noise or movement occurred. He looked down at his watch: 7:12 AM. The sun was in the sky but dew still littered the ground. The morning had a damp, eerie feel to it. Regardless, Leif stepped out of his hut and looked around. He was shocked in a good way when he saw a running stream, no more then 20 yards away. He had not noticed it the day before, nor heard it. He went to it to have a morning drink, refreshing himself before setting off to find some breakfast. Leif decided to look in trees for bird’s nests to have eggs. After finding three decent size eggs, Leif took note that the nest was in a pine tree. He would look there next time he was in search of eggs. He went back to his shelter and made a fire which he cooked the eggs over. Having been filled with eggs, Leif explored the land around his new home. Mentally, he took note of specific landmarks and geographical features. Leif discovered different types of birds, field mice and other rodents, beavers and other animals. He hoped maybe to catch some meat in the near future. Leif looked by the nearby stream where he found a nice fishing hole. Leif went back to camp where he started on a fishing hook. He took a very slender stick, took the bark off and wet it. Then he put a curve on it similar to a fishing hook and set it to dry. Hopefully, he thought, it would dry curved and I will be able to sharpen one end. Fishing will be marvelously easier with it.
By the afternoon, the soon-to-be hook was dry. Leif checked it to make sure it would hold; by testing it, the hook could withstand a large amount of wait and stress. It would be a splendid fishing hook. So, he sharpened one end with his pocket knife and put a hole in the other side for some type of makeshift fishing line. Luckily, Leif brought some string in case he needed it. He cut off about a 10 foot piece and tied it to the hook and the other end to a very think, sturdy branch. By the time Leif accomplished making the hook, he was hungry. He took the line, with trout’s guts from last night’s dinner, and went fishing at the stream. But after what seemed like hours, Leif gave up. He sighed and looked up at the sky. The wild was a great challenge that he had to face, and Leif decided to keep fishing. To his surprise, only about five minutes later, a fish tugged on the line. Leif pulled it out of the water to discover his prize. He held the fish up and estimated its weight at about 2 pounds. It was a big fish, suitable for lunch and dinner. Leif cooked the fish and, sure enough, it fed him lunch and dinner with some left over for breakfast. Leif went to bed warm and full, satisfied with his days work. He fell asleep with a deep feeling of comfort and happiness toward the wilderness.
