The great blackout that hit the East Coast of the United States and two provinces of Canada was actually an alien attack Newgate and ACE repelled.
November 9, 1965 started out quite normally. It was a Tuesday; the first day that most people got anything done during the week. But ACE had been on the alert since the weekend because there were reports that a massive invasion fleet from the Alliance and two empires that joined the Alliance was heading for Earth. With the Vietnam War being the only major conflict in the world that might cause the Dorellians to want to take advantage of chaos to invade earth, there had to be some other form of chaos that might attract the Alliance to this planet.
The chaos that occured happened at 5:27 PM when much of the East Coast of the United States and Canada experience the Great Blackout of 1965. A scout ship that had shifted into another dimension before the Alliance reached the Kuyper Belt headed toward earth at hyperlight speed; shifting dimensions every few seconds to elude detection whenever possible. To further avoid attention, it approached this planet from the other side of the Kuyper Belt which was nowhere near where the invasion fleet was going to enter the belt.
The scout ship shifted into our dimension shortly before it caused a discharge in Ontario at the Sir Adam Beck Station. Since it didn’t want to alert ACE forces stationed in this dimension overtly, it caused minor damage which sent much of the East Coast into the dark. This was the signal to the fleet to head toward earth even though the results wouldn’t be seen for hours out in the Kuyper Belt. A signal was sent from the scout ship to come into the belt.
But the scout ship wasn’t totally unobserved. The University of Newgate ran one of the transdimensional scanning sensors that could monitor sometimes 100 different dimensions simultaineously. An ACE attack craft was dispatched when the scout was detected about ten seconds away from earth. But it was too late to prevent the discharge.
The attack craft was manned by a veteran of KBW 2; Major Sendren Karnt. He saw the start of the cascade of blackouts after he spotted the scout and took off after the craft. It transmitted a multi-dimensional signal in all directions so that ACE wouldn’t know where exactly the fleet was going to enter the belt. But since the strongest signals were transmitted in a certain direction, ACE ships awaited the arrival in that region.
