With synthetics considered citizens of Newgate, any crime done against a synthetic was considered the same as committing a crime against a human. This is the case of DHR345 v. Worngram.
Synthetics were as much a part of Newgate as what soldiers are in the army. When KBW II required so many men to fight against enemy aliens out in space, the importance of synthetics for the smooth operation of the city was fully realized.
One of the employers of synthetics during the war and afterwards was Durgan Worngram. He operated Worngram Appliance Manufacturing on the outskirts of Newgate in a building which years later would become the church building and Christian school for the Pleasantview Baptist Chruch.
A human caused an accident in the factory when a man who was talking with a client via headset walked in front of a forklift that was delivering metal to one of the assembly lines. DHR345 which went by the name of Dehren saw what was about to happen and ran out to save the man from being killed. The forklift stopped short as the synthetic pushed the man out of its path. But the sheets of metal slid off of the skid they were on and crushed the synthetic’s legs.
Normally synthetics are either rebuilt or discarded. Worngram decided to have his legs removed and have him reprogrammed to do assembly line work where he could sit all the time and do things with his arms and hands. He wouldn’t make as much money to bring home to his human wife which meant she would have to find a job. With two cyborg children, there were three hungry mouths to feed in the household.
The food and beverage synthesizer was getting old and would soon have to be replaced. The vehicle the wife drove was also on its last legs. So the big pay cut was devastating. But Dehren’s boss didn’t think he was important enough to pay to replace the legs so that the synthetic could continue working as a supervisor in the staging area between the warehouse and the assembly lines.
The wife talked with Barnfren Valtram who was the grandson of the founder of the Valtram Investigation Agency. Just like his grandfather, he had multiple screens (24) to watch his synthetics as they investigated cases and he loved coffee and pie. But he favored his coffee flavored with caramel instead of black and his favorite pie was banana custard.
