Penang with its many missionary schools, of which some are built more than a 100 years ago tend to carry tales passed down by student after student. Here are some of the well-known stories of one of the famous schools – St. Xavier’s Institution.
St. Xavier’s Institution was founded back in 1857 by the La Sallian Brothers. It was one of the missionary schools that were headed by the white robed Christian brothers who served and stayed within the school premises. After the main building was bombed during World War 2, a new building was erected with certain changes but its mysteries still remain within the building.
Having a chapel and pictures of the past christian brothers hung to the walls, the institution also had a painting of a pope who had already passed within the brothers’ quarters. It was rumored that because the brothers were so strong in their servitude to God and their allegiance to the pope, that one night, the brothers were constantly woken throughout for no apparent reason. In the morning, one of the brothers found the painting of the pope out of position and so he adjusted it back. That very night, all the brothers could sleep soundly again.
It was also said that the boy scouts who spend the night in the school were those who experienced the spookiest of things. The story goes that a group was on midnight duty one night and they were positioned over at the canteen. The boys chatted with each other to stay awake but it wasn’t long when suddenly one of them suddenly turned pale with fright. That boy saw a Christian brother, the face from the photo he remembered which hangs on the wall of the school, dating the year of bereavement of which was 1917! The brother had his same white robes, a European, and he stared coldly at them from the first floor before disappearing into the darkness.
Another story was about soldiers. During WW2, the Japanese took over the school and used it as an outpost. The allies knowing this, bombed the building severely and many Japanese soldiers were killed during the air strike. Many scouts have reported hearing noises of Japanese troops marching in the middle of the night at the basketball court when it is most silent. The most spooky incident was the night when a few of the scouts got a little mischievous and decided to have a game of hide and seek at the building wing, which was said to be the former sleeping quarters of the Japanese soldiers. The game came to a stop when the group suddenly heard a scream and one of the boys came out limping and breathless saying that a dark faceless figure stood right before him.
Another one of the mysteries is the rumored tunnel beneath the stage of the school hall, which had an underground access to the Convent School located opposite the institution. Apparently this tunnel was said to lead to the beach area of the Convent School.
