A story written for my daughter to help her overcome her fear of the doctor.

There a many things in life that we just don’t enjoy, like going to the doctor for example, but shall I tell you why going to the doctor is so important?

The doctor works very hard every day for every little boy and girl, every Mummy and Daddy and every Grandma and Grandad to make sure we all stay healthy.

But have you ever wondered why the doctor never gets sick and is always happy to see you even though you could give him your naughty germs?

Well, when you see the doctor something very wonderful happens which you can’t see or feel but is truly magical.

Have you noticed that when the doctor checks you he always does the same things?

He puts a stick on your tongue, makes you say “AAAAAH!”, and looks into your mouth.

He puts a thermometer under your arm and checks how hot you are.

He shines a little light and looks into your eyes and ears.

And he puts a cold stethoscope to your chest and listens to your heart.

At the time these things feel strange, uncomfortable and even scary, don’t they, but this is when the magic happens….

You see, when the doctor looks into your mouth you give him some of your breath.

When he takes your temperature, you give him a little bit of your warmth.

When he looks into your eyes and ears you give him a little bit of power to see and hear people’s problems.

And when he listens to your heart you give him one of your heartbeats and a little bit of love.

All of these little gifts from each of the people he sees each day, give the doctor the power he needs to keep on helping us.

So, next time you get a cough or a runny nose, remember what I have just told you and who knows, you might just enjoy going to the doctor after all.
