                                                                                 Chapter Three

It was Saturday the 4th of July and C.J. was excited because her mother and Mrs. Jensen were planning to have a picnic and invite the neighbor across the street. The girls had a lot of fire works that they had been dying to shoot off.  C.J.’s mind was going full speed trying to think of how to make this a fun day for her and Lena, besides having to hangout with the grownups.  While she thought, she helped her mother get things ready for the picnic. Her job was to make sure that there were enough plates, cups, spoons, and napkins. She also got to help set up the picnic table and chairs in the backyard. Mrs. Fitzpatrick was a good cook and everyone raved about her baked beans, potato salad, and apple pie, and these were on the menu to be served. Mrs. Fitzpatrick and Mrs. Jensen always tried to get together on special occasions to stay on top of what had been happening in the community.  When they got together, they were like kids giggling and cutting up. It made the girls happy to see them get along so well.  The neighbor that lived across the street was Mrs. Thomas. She was known as the biggest busy body in the community and definitely the biggest C.J. knew. She didn’t have many friends and Mrs. Fitzpatrick felt that it was her duty to befriend her.
