Tom and Joe are good friends. They like to see new places and often go hiking together.

It is autumn. Tom and Joe are hiking. At seven o’clock in the evening they come to a village.

“It will soon be dark and the weather is not good”, says Tom. “We must stay at the village hotel for the night.”

They go to the hotel. It is a small hotel. The man on duty says that he can only give them a room for two on the first floor. He gives them the key to the room and a candle.

“There’s no electricity in the house tonight,” he says to them.

Tom and Joe go up to their room, but at the door of their room the candle goes out and they cannot find their box of matches.

They open the door and undress in the dark. Then they say good-night to each other and get into bed.

When they are in bed, Tom says, “Joe! There’s a man in my bed. His feet are on my pillow!”

“There’s a man in my bed too,” says Joe.

“I’ll push my man out,” says Tom. “I don’t want to be in the same bed with a stranger.”

“I will also try to do that,” says Joe.

They push hard. After a minute or two Tom says, “I’m not in bed, I’m on the floor.”

“My man has pushed me out too,” says Joe. “I don’t like this hotel.”

They are very tired and spend the night on the floor.

In the morning Tom wakes up before Joe. Joe is sleeping on the floor near the same bed. There’s nobody in the two beds.

When Joe opens his eyes, Tom says, “I know now what happened at night. We wew in the same bed. I pushed you out and you pushed me out.”
