A love that bloomed in a concentration camp.
In 1942, there was a young boy sitting alone and looking beyond the barbed wire at the Nazi concentration camp. He saw a young girl pass by. This young girl noticed the young boy’s gaze. Feeling shy for what she noticed, she decided to throw an apple to the boy over fence thinking that it’s a sign of life, of hope and of love. The boy smiled as he picked the apple.
The next day, he thought he is being foolish for even thinking that he will be able to see the young girl again. Despite of feeling foolish, he looked beyond the barbed wire fence hoping to see her. On the other side of the barbed wired fence, the young girl longed to see the young boy who moved her so. She brought with her an apple and despite of the blizzards in the winter and the very chilling wind, the girl threw the apple to the boy and their hearts were warmed that they were able to see one another
This passing of apple has continued for several days. These two young people are always looking forward to seeing one another, even for a short moment and even for a few words to say to one another. But their interactions are always accompanied with a feeling that cannot be explained.
One day, the young boy greeted the young girl with the sad face and said “Don’t bring me an apple tomorrow, they will send me to another camp”. He then walked away with a very heavy heart. Too broken hearted to even try to look back.
When he was at the new camp, the image of this young girl is the only thing that can calm him in his times of anguish. The thoughts of her eyes, her words, her thoughtfulness, the red apple from her, all these were playing back on his mind. His family had died in the war and the life he knows had gone. The memory of the young girl is the only memory that is alive and is giving him hope.
In 1957 in the United State, two adults were set on a blind date and they were both immigrants. The woman asked the man of his whereabouts during the war, “ I was in Germany, at the concentration camp” the man said. Then the woman said “I remembered throwing an apple to a boy in the concentration camp” she said. The man was surprised at what the woman had said “Did the boy told you not to bring him an apple anymore because he is moving to another camp?” he asked “Why, Yes I remember” she said “But how could you known that” she asked more. Then the man looked at her eyes and said, “I was that young boy”.
The two was quiet for a moment and then the man said, “I was separated from you before, and I do not want ever want to be without you again. Will you marry me?” They hugged one another and she said, “Yes”.
