A fictional first hand account of the black plague. I wrote it for world history class and realized it was good story.

1345 A.D.

Recently I have had to become a serf and work on a lord’s land for a living. However most people think I should be disappointed by this, but I actually am quite pleasant with my situation. After all I have land of my own, a warm house, and best of all protection from thieves and madmen alike. Not to mention my lord is a generous man from what I hear the other lord’s take much more from there serf’s. My lord seems to be alone and having no family to support he demands much less of us because he needs less from us. The manor is very far from any town, as we are settled close to a monastery; it is a half days walk to the nearest town.

1347 A.D. October

Recently I have heard that the savage Mongols have a city called Caffa under siege. The story is, they have been suffering some unknown illness and their dead were catapulted over the walls of Caffa, in hope of infecting the citizens! The man at the general store told me most of the citizens have fled by ship to places like Messina, Genoa, and Venice. I guess the Mongols can have that one.

1348 A.D. March

It is to my horror that I was informed on my rare trip to town that the strange sickness those Mongols had has spread to all the port cities the citizens had fled to. What’s even more disturbing is that hardly any of them had more than 10 living people on board. Some ships were found grounded with no one alive onboard! According to the tailor people have foolishly and greedily looted these ships of their valuables and all have died or fallen ill. It sounds like a curse of some sort but the Mongols had it to, so I talked to the local apothecary and he believes it is a disease, the priest believes this hypothesis is correct.

1348 A.D. August

Today I am scared for my life as this curse, or illness has spread to most of Europe. Entire kingdoms have been taken over by this disease. My lord does not believe we are in danger because we are on an island, however I doubt him for one reason: we are still trading; sending ships out, and taking ships in without even the slightest care. I fear it’s only a matter of time before England is hit with God’s vengeance for our sins.
