The Blood Test

Sam looked at his blood test appointment, he spun the piece of card over and over in his hands until the corners were bent and the ink started to smudge. Julie walked in the kitchen and said,

“Sam it wont change because you stare at it honey. Why don’t you go have a shave and take your mind off it? I’ll rustle us up some eggs on toast”

Sam walked up the carpeted stairs and took off his shirt in front of the bathroom mirror. He ran his hands over his muscled chest then pulled down his eye lids and looked at the colour of the skin, its was slightly white with tiny yellow dots. Sam wetted his face in the hot water and applied the shaving foam. He mused to himself,
‘How did I God damn agree to this blood test? I’ve avoided it for so long, Julie just wont let go and she even told my bloody doctor’

The reflection stared back at Sam. The strong jaw line and proud nose belayed his inner feelings of dread. He wiped his face and donned his white designer shirt and put in his Armani aftershave. From the kitchen Sam heard,

“Come on darling lets get this over with; I’ll drive so you can relax, we knew this day was coming”

The silver Audi S8 convertible rumbled into life and with Julie at the wheel the Audi swung out of the gravel driveway and joined the rush hour traffic. Julie pushed the CD button on the stereo and the hits of summer 2019 blared out of the perfect speakers. Sam said,

“Are you trying to be funny! The hits of summer 2019! Are you reminding me of what I did!”

Julie looked ahead and said nothing then,

“Look you change the CD its just what was in there. You shouldn’t be so annoyed you did it not me! If you really want to row about this on the way to the hospital fine!”

Sam slowly shook his head in submission he mumbled beneath his breath,

“It was only the once just one night; out of how many years have we been married 12 is it?”
