Lisa Wicker, a girl of twelve, was walking down the school hall with her best friend, Peter Micheals, when the intercom turned on.
"Attention students, a young boy, Jack Meldo, died yesterday afternoon. We would like to now take a moment of silence for him." announced the school principle.
Lisa Wicker, a girl of twelve, was walking down the school hall with her best friend, Peter Micheals, when the intercom turned on.
“Attention students, a young boy, Jack Meldo, died yesterday afternoon. We would like to now take a moment of silence for him.” announced the school principle.
“Did you know Jack?” Lisa asked Peter.
“I didn’t know him, and come to think of it, I never heard of him until today,” responded Peter.
Lisa and Peter continued to talk as they made their way toward the cafeteria. As their shoes met the cafeteria floor Lisa stopped and got pushed down by Katherine Drant, another girl of twelve.
“Sorry, Lisa, I didn’t think you’d stop,” said Kathrine, appologizing.
“It’s okay, Kat, I was just thinking about that boy who died yesterday.” replied Lisa.
“What boy?”
“Did you not hear the intercom? A kid named Jack Meldo died yesterday.”
“Oh, that kid. Why? Did you know him?”
“No… Um, we better get in line.”
Lisa and Kathrine got in the lunch line without another word. Lisa could not get the mysterious boy out of her head, not even when the lunch lady slopped the mystery meat on her tray. The rest of the day she tried to find out who Jack Meldo was, but nobody knew.
Satuday morning, Lisa looked in her school directory to locate where Jack Meldo lived. To her surprise, Jack Meldo, lived at the end of her block. Not forgetting to say good bye to her mom, Lisa grabbed her coat walking out the door. Peter was out on his front porch when he saw Lisa and decided to catch up with her.
“Hey, Lisa, where ya going?” asked Peter.
“”I’m going to Jack Meldo’s house,” answered Lisa.
“You still trying find out who the kid is? No offense to him or his family, but he is dead. What do you think you can get from knowing who he was?”
“I don’t know…”
Lisa and Peter climbed onto the Meldo family’s porch and knocked on the door. A Lady approximatley the age of twenty-nine answered the door.
“I am sorry about the intrusion, but… um… Are you Mrs. Meldo?” Lisa asked, trying to be polite as possible.
“I am, what would you like?” replied Mrs. Meldo, trying to look presentable.
“I don’t mean to be, um, awkward, but could you tell me about Jack?”
“What?”
“He went to my school…”
