Considering that "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" is a very depressing book, this is an ending that will have the opposite effect.

‘Hello Bruno,’ Papa said, and as he turned to Shmuel, he said, ‘I’ve got something for you that is better than food,’ and he pulled out the DVD, Top Gun, an old watch and a fluffy toy that he said was called “Donkey Pony”.

When Shmuel saw the gifts, his eyes opened wide, his mouth made the shape of an O and he hugged his Papa once again.

‘Thankyou so much Papa! I thought I would never see this watch again, and this is my favourite movie, but what on earth is wrong with this toy?!? It looks like a cowboy donkey with buck teeth! Oh well, thankyou Papa!’

‘No problem! But one question, how did Bruno get to this side of the fence?’

‘Come with us, we’ll show you where we’ve been meeting for the past year or so, but you have to promise that you won’t tell anyone, it’s a secret.’

            ‘I won’t,’ replied Papa.

So Bruno and Shmuel led Papa and Joseph away from the camp, to the spot where they had been meeting. When Papa saw it, he didn’t think anything of it until Shmuel lifted up the bottom of the fence.

‘This is it!’ exclaimed Papa, ‘This is our way out of here! Quick, everybody under the fence, before someone sees us!’

After they had all crawled under the fence, they looked up to see a big, bright rainbow that had just appeared in the sky.

‘Hey, has anybody heard the story that there is always a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow?’ asked Bruno.

‘No, but lets go and see!’ said Shmuel enthusiastically. So they all set off towards the rainbow. As they get closer, they notice a little person in the distance.

‘Hello over there!’ says the figure in a squeaky little voice, with an Irish accent, and they decided it couldn’t be anyone dangerous.

‘Hello!’ yelled back Papa. When they get closer, they see it is a small green man with red hair and a beard, standing next to a pot of gold.

‘Hello to ya!’ says the Leprechaun, ‘Can I interest you in a pot of gold today?’

‘Sure!’ said Bruno. When they touched the pot of gold, they got zapped into a magical land and lived happily ever after.
