Daniel Tammet was the subject of a documentary in 2005.
In 2005 Britain’s Channel 4 first aired a documentary which was as inspiring as it was shocking. It showed Daniel Tammet’s seemingly effortless ability to perform mathematical problems and quote them to hundreds of decimal places. Even when the results of a square root problem were tested on a computer, he could quote the number to more decimal places than the computer could. This is extraordinary on its own. What sets Daniel even further apart from others who possess similar capabilities is how his brain is performing these mammoth feats. It has been suggested that he has a form of synesthesia, where sensory signals in the brain are processed in unorthodox regions of the brain. The result is that he sees numbers in the way that most people see light reflected from objects. It was suggested that his amazing abilities were caused by violent epileptic seizures combined with a form of autism.
He was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome when he was 25 years old. He seems to be able to acquire linguistic skills phenomenally easily, quite atypical for someone with Asperger Syndrome who can have withdrawn behaviour and be mute in extreme cases. He is able to speak ten languages and is in the process of constructing his own language, which he calls Mänti. Mänti appears to be a Finno-Ugric language and has words which are very similar to Finnish and Estonian. His surname, Tammet, is a name he chose himself and is Finnish for “oaks”.
In the documentary he was a guest on David Letterman’s Late show as he tried to publicise his book launch in a tour of America. He demonstrated a common test of an autistic savant: the ability to name the day of the week a particular date falls on. He also met Kim Peek, who provided the inspiration for The Rain Main, whose part was played by Dustin Hoffman. He is being studied by neurological experts to see if others can learn with the proficiency that he can. Daniel decided that university life was unsuitable for him, so he currently works as a distance-learning tutor teaching French and Spanish.
