Why so many people are moving out of Detroit.
For the past thirty-five years, I have been calling Detroit my home. Now I’m at the point where I want to run as fast as I can, to get away from here that is. The crime rates are to the roof at this point. In 2006, I had to attend a class so I could be licensed to carry my gun due to it being much needed. One evening I was heading in to work and realized I was low on gas, so I decided to stop at a gas station on Myers and Fenkell. Fenkell has always been known to be a terrible area in Detroit. I had been residing over there for the past two years without any problems until this day. The gas station was clear of people this particular night. I thought to myself, “is that a good thing or a bad thing?” I proceeded to go inside the gas station so I can fill up my vehicle. I told the gas station attendant that I wanted $ 40 on pump five. When you go through something that’s life threatening you tend to remember every small detail. So as I’m walking out the door to my SUV I noticed two guys pulling up in a Monte Carlo that’s black in color. Living in this city has taught me to pay attention to my surroundings at all times no matter what. I begin to pump my gas and I noticed one of the guys continuously looking my way as he exited the gas station. I begin to act as if I didn’t see him looking my way. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous at this point. I popped the back hatch to my truck and grabbed one of my work tools, a hydrant wrench. I knew that it would be the perfect weapon if I had to fight this guy off me. As I figured, he made his way over to me and asked did he know me from somewhere. As he was walking over his hands was in his pocket so I grew worried. I politely said, “no you don’t”. So the guy said, “okay” with devilish grind on his face. I knew then that he was up to no good. When he came to approach me the second time it wasn’t to ask me do he know me. He reached out to grab me by my shirt, so I pulled the gas nozzle out of my truck and begin to squirt him with gas. In my left hand was my hydrant wrench, so I started hitting him on any body part that’s was in reach. The guy must have known that he would set himself on fire if he fire his gun. Him and his friend ran back to their car and as he was running away he said, “I will see you again and next time you won’t be so lucky bitch”! Lucky isn’t the word, God was on my side. My whispered to myself over and over again, “Thank You Jesus, Thank You Jesus” as they pulled away at high speed.
