The coffee shop is one of my favorite places to go. In general it gives you an internal calm that can easily escape you on a day-to-day basis.
You open the door and the smell of delicious pastries and all those wonderful types of coffee we so enjoy. Stepping in you are filled with a sort of calm. Modern elegance; high quality hardwood floors with matching chairs and tables combined with neutral wallpapers with light patterns. Bricks cover a section of the wall in a tasteful way to compliment a big fireplace with leather couches huddled around in a warm semi-circle, little tables for food and drink beside each one. The coffee shop is a wonderful place. It promises mocha lattes with whipped cream and chocolate shavings, delicious muffins, pastries of every flavor, bagels, donuts, sandwiches and salads, snacks and pop, juice and hot chocolate and ice capps, pies and cakes and everything sweet that you could imagine. People come here for a bite to eat, for a drink, or just to sit and relax for a while, to take a break from their busy lives.
As I sit in the coffee shop I start to wonder about the lives of the people here outside of this little haven. Wind chimes attached to the door jingle. A senior comes in. His hair has long gone white, his face is lines with wrinkles, but his old glasses cover bright green eyes. He still has a youthful glow despite his age. He is a regular here, the employees great him by name, happy to see him. He orders a large black coffee and leaves.
More jingling. A boy and his father come in. The father seems happy to be a called daddy, and the boys eyes light up as they rest upon the colourful sprinkled vanilla dip donut. The father does not hesitate to buy this for his son along with a chocolate milk. It may not be a healthy meal, but it’s a treat that we all deserve once in a while. Of course no one could be sure, but the two seem to have such a warm father-son bond, the kind that is not easily broken, as they walked out of the coffee shop hand in hand back to the world outside smiling.
There are a few others here of every different ages and races. There are no conflicts, not even a hint of one. Everyone seems to be content. The atmosphere is calm and quiet, and all that is bad in the world is forgotten. It is a dark rainy day outside, but inside it feels safe and cozy. I can’t help wondering why the rest of the world can’t be like this. The alarm on my ipod goes off and drags me out of my thoughts. It’s time to leave. Damn, it’s still raining and my makeup isn’t waterproof. I forgot my umbrella and I don’t have a hood, my hair will get messed up. I have a million things to do today. I guess it’s time to join the rest of the melancholy world outside of the coffee shop.
