About teen love, drama, and high school.
I glanced, for the third time, at the name at the bottom of the poem. I could feel my face turning red. This can not be happening, I said to herself and almost groaned out loud. This is so embarrassing!
I had written the poem in my diary and put the diary into my locker, but somehow, an evil, twisted head-cheerleader named Darcy broke into my locker and stole my diary. It had all of my personal, romantic thoughts about a certain drop-dead-gorgeous quarterback named Brian. Okay, here’s the thing. I have been in love with him since the ninth grade, but unfortunitely he had been dating Darcy at the time, and was off limits. But now, since they’re broken up, and I’m a more mature tenth grader, I think I might actually have a chance with him. That is, if Darcy doesn’t ruin everything!
I looked across the classroom to where Brian stood next to the chalkboard talking to his team mates. They were trying to figure out how to solve this very difficult math problem. It was a game that our geometry teacher, Mr. Farley, had decided we all shoud play today in order to get a better understanding of the material. He gave each team a geometry problem and the team that solved it the fastest, won extra credit points. To be perfectly honest, I already know the material, but I like to keep that knowledge as my little secret because apparently certain jocks don’t like brainy girls. Go figure! I mean, they like us when we’re helping them with there homework, but after that, it’s like we don’t even exist!
After a while, I started to drift off into my own little world, where I was Brian’s girlfriend and Darcy didn’t exist. But, right before I got a chance to kiss him, I was brought back to reality by my best friend Cameron. He poked me in the arm until he finally got my attention, which by then my arm was very sore.
“What are you doing? You’re supposed to be working, not daydreaming,” Cameron whispered in my ear so that nobody but me could hear.
Unfortunately, it caught everyones attention when he leaned towards me, including Brian and Darcy. “Awwwwe, how cute! The two lovebirds are sharing secrets!” Darcy teased, “First she writes him a love poem, now he’s whispering in her ear!” She burst out laughing at her own joke. I could hear others laughing as well. I scooted down in my seat and tried to pretend that I was invisible by propping my math book up in front of my face.
Cameron and I have known each other since before we can remember. We had never been anything more than friends. In fact, I only think of him as the brother I never had (or wanted!). I mean, it’s not that I don’t think he’s cute or anything, but I just don’t think I have those type of feelings for him. Love is a very complicated thing, and sometimes people don’t always know it when it happens to them, but I’m pretty certain that I don’t love Cameron and he definitely doesn’t love me. Besides, he’s more of an independant person. In other words, he doesn’t want a “relationship”, just casual dating. Or so he says!
I could still hear Darcy squealing in the background as Cameron starts yelling at her. “Why don’t you just shut up, and leave us alone, Darcy? Don’t you have anything better to do, like get a life!” Darcy gives Cameron a look of pure evil, then turns towards me with a fake smile and a look of false sympathy. “Awe, how sweet, Samantha’s got a bodyguard!” Darcy laughed again.
I felt like crying, but luckily the lunch bell saved me from any further embarrassment. I grabbed my math book, threw it into my back pack, and ran from the room. I ran straight into the girls bathroom, which was, thankfully, empty. I locked myself into the stall on the very end, then sat down and cried.
