I am a very common writing utensil. I am about 8 inches long and have an eraser.

I hold lead in between wood that conveniently is colored yellow. I am long and skinny, but big enough to hold in your hand. I am a pencil.

In the morning I awake in a back pack. As I’m in the backpack the boy I’m owned by walks to the bus. Sometimes when he is late he runs and it can get kind of shaky. Once we get on the bus it is calm. This is when everything changes. I finally am taken out of the backpack in the school. I am carried around inside the school until 8:05 when class starts.

In the afternoon I’m used more than any other part of the day. I write and write and write until my lead is flat. This is when things get most interesting. I think this is what the boy refers to as a haircut for pencils. I am sharpened. He sticks my tip in to a round metal hole and turns a lever. This lever makes a knife go around in a circle and cuts of my extra wood. Also my eraser moves a lot during the period of time and takes away the mistakes that the boy makes with my lead.

The night time is my favorite time of all. All that I have to do at home is sign a few papers that the boy has to get signed and sleep. It is my favorite not only because I get to sleep. But also because I get to write for someone other than the boy I get to write for his mom too. She has softer hands or something so it’s not as rough.

Well that pretty much sums up what the day of a pencil is like. Although I’m only a pencil, my day isn’t much different from yours. I wake up in the morning, work hard during the day, and night is my favorite time of the day. So the next time you pick up a pencil think of how it’s day compares to yours.
