The Dead Walk

Like always I rolled out of bed and was immediately wide-awake.  The sun was starting to peek through the blinds and like usual there was no new snow on the ground like the weather lady said.  I got out of bead and fell into the push up position and did my morning workout, then headed straight for the shower.   I took a little longer than usual just standing under the hot water.

I needed that shower because today was going to be a long day at work; I was protecting some big wig from some oil company who meeting with other big wigs in Denver for some kind of oil summit.  I didn’t usually care that much to look into the people I was assigned to protect, I thought it keep things less personal that way, thus I was able to be more professionally objective.

After I was dressed I walked out to the living room and turned the TV on.  There was a breaking story coming from Mexico, the newscaster said something about a small town that was having an outbreak of illness.  She said something about some new virus, as soon as I heard that I tuned her out.  The last time the news broke the news about a new virus it was H1N1, and that whole thing was a load of crap.

I finished up breakfast and went about my normal routine of making sure my sidearm was ready to go and all of my equipment was in working order.  When I got in the car even the morning shows were talking about that damn virus, I was starting to get annoyed so I just put on some Esco to listen to his story telling.  By the time I got to work I had forgotten all about any current events and problems and was ready to get the workday started.

Sophia the secretary for the office greeted me with her normal smile and that look that always said, “jump my bones”.  When I got into the morning briefing I noticed that George wasn’t there.  George never missed a briefing for a client as high profile as this guy we were guarding today.

“Where is George?”  I asked Nathan, my long time friend and co-worker at the private security-contracting firm.
