Millicent Holmes arrives, on board the HMS Durning, in London, from New York, to join the rest of her family in attending the double funerals of her father, Sherlock Holmes and her best friend’s father, Dr. John Watson. Together with her friend, Miss Watson, Scotland Yard, and her American husband, they track down the killers of their parents except for one who has escaped.

The Detective’s Daughter

The second voyage, she had made, during her fathers brief but severe illness, from New York to London, had been both relaxing and unnerving as the HMS Durning traversed across the submarine infested Atlantic Ocean of 1917. But, now in 1921, she merely breathed a sigh of relief, as the ship finally allowed the passengers to go ashore.  Each to the waiting arms of their families and assorted well wishers on the docks below, all except for the two of us..

For amidst the other well wishers, on the dock, the Queen, who had taken a great liking to Millicent and her sisters, when she was but a Duchess, had sent a small contingent of her personal body guard, a cadre of Scotland yards finest, and a car, to insure that no harm befall the daughter of, perhaps, one of England’s greatest heroes, if not it’s greatest detective.  For as the case remained unsolved, and the person or persons that committed the murders were still at large, the Queen wanted no harm to fall upon her young friend.  It was strongly thought that Lord Moriarty, was behind the killings, nothing could be proved, nor could any trace of him be found since before the War had started in 1914.   I, alone, Dr. Judith Watson, was the only single passenger permitted to ride, in the Royal Car sent, to pick up my long time and dearest friend.

As she departed the passenger’s plank, she and her husband, Detective Charles Blackstone, originally of the Bostonian Blackstone family, now a New York City Detective, stationed in, of all places, Queens, were suddenly escorted to the car by no less than twenty police and the Queen’s bodyguard.

They were driven to meet the rest of the family members at her mother, Lady Penelope’s well maintained, but long abandoned by Sherlock Holmes, Estate.  It had been decided that Millicent’s sister, Penelope Osborne, Her Grace The Duchess of Leeds, now returned, from America, after the tragic loss of her husband in a train crash, would now reside in her mother’s manor.  The Holmes girls, for the most part, were brought up in the manor and tutored privately, when they were not spending time with their father, in London.
