Short story about guinea pigs and an earthquake.

The cavies were all grouped together around  Smokey Boy.  All were upset and there was a lot of wheeking and rumbling among them. The mothers were frantically attempting to gather their youngsters near them.  The youngsters were much more interested in playing with the other babies.  Big, muscular boars were rumble strutting around trying to impress all.  Suddenly Smokey jumped up on brick and whistled loudly.    “My friends, family and children we are gathered here today to take steps to protect ourselves in case the big earth shaking should happen again.”   “Why, we did not get hurt in the last one? The humans take care of us”, said Gina.   “Yes, let the humans take care of us” said Red.   “Please be quiet and listen to Smokey” said Lady Goldfinger with great dignity.   “Yes, we should all listen to what Smokey has to say” said Copper Queen.   “Thank you all” Smokey said  “Our humans do the best they can, but they do not seem to feel the earth preparing itself for a shake like we do.  Perhaps we shall have to find a way to help our humans, instead of always looking to them to help us.  Perhaps they are not aware of the earth, like we are!”   All present wheeked their agreement and crowded closer.  Even the boars agreed in deep voices.  “Yes”  “Yes”   “Let us all start today, teaching our humans to listen to the earth” suggested Boo.   “But how?” inquired  Goldfinger.   “I am afraid that humans have forgotten how to listen to the earth” said Copper King, over time they have forgotten how to listen to the animals, how to be free.  They drive big metal machines on things called highways, to work in big cement buildings.  They do not walk on good clean earth, or smell the trees, grass and earth, or see the beauty in the flowers, birds and animals.  They have changed!”   Slowly the cavies murmured their agreement and huddled together with much pain and anguish on their faces.    Out of center of the huddled cavies came the small voice of little Earthquake.  “That sounds like they are dead”   Lady Goldfinger answered, “Yes, little one humans are dead in many ways!  Perhaps our mission should be to love them very much and try to revive that tiny spark of life.  Too keep it burning and maybe some day it will burst into a flame of love and joy for all of nature as it once was!”
