A short science fiction story about an extraterrestrial invasion of Earth.
The story began as a rumour at first, a myth. The rumour became a legend after years of mystery, then it resurfaced. Governments began to take notice, and take action. Other planets from other galaxies had just been vanishing into thin air. For how long had this been continuing, and questions of the sort remained unanswered.
Nature, as reliable as ever, had indeed decided in due course to explain itself and this unknown phenomenon to humankind. Astronomers had found inexplicable enormous masses travelling at astonishing speeds between galaxies, and, ever so slowly, approaching the beloved earth.
The super-massive black-hole had arrived on our doorstep, inevitably. The arrival of the guests had simultaneously rekindled that lingering belief in each and every human’s soul that they had believed for millennia. Widespread hysteria had spread across the earth, never before had a single occurrence incurred such mixed and volatile reactions.
Eventually, a smaller vessel was seen disembarking from the mother ship, and it was earth-bound. Earth sent their number to meet it. There was no question about it. They were extra-terrestrials. Yet, they desired to converse with our leaders, they did not immediately engage. They seemed to understand the human-beings, as their knowledge was unimaginably superior. This is all that the world needed to have knowledge of, so far, as the extra-terrestrials intentions were not entirely clear.
The discussions were premature, as humankind was to be told of their date with destiny. Word had spread that the human race needed a reason to exist, to prove their worth in living. The extra-terrestrials had revealed to humankind that they had been travelling from galaxy to galaxy, planet to planet eliminating those species that did not have sufficient reason to exist. The next on their agenda was earth, and the extra-terrestrials were not impressed. They felt that the human race were of no benefit to earth, humankind had been considered as self-destructive and detrimental to all.
They were curios though, that we possessed significant intelligence, and yet we were still so primeval in our methods and mentality. Humankind was a self-destructive society. They searched for a valid enough reason not to exterminate the race of human-beings. The leaders of the world had frantically assembled all the intellectuals of the world to solve this dilemma. Yet, none had been able to counter their argument. Time was running out.
Panic was widespread. The human race was failing. The people did not know what to do. The end was near. The dreaded day had finally come for the visitors to leave. The extra-terrestrials had sympathy, though, for the other inhabitants of the planet. They pitied them. Why should they have to suffer at the cost of the human-beings? They deserved a chance. They decided to spare all the other living creatures on earth.
In one instant, the history of an entire race had vanished. All bodies of the billions of past inhabitants of the earth had vanished. However, they decided to allow all humankinds work stay on, while wiping out all the names of history. Planet Earth would learn from its mistakes. All that remained was an empty phone book, a nameless phone book, to mark the previous presence of a society.
