A myth about the Iroquois.
One day, a young boy stole some of the food from the sacrifice for the gods. The gods saw this. The gods told the Iroquois, “Your hunters will see no deer. Your farmer’s crops will all wither. Your water will dry up. This will be your punishment for your greed.”
The next day, just as the gods told the Iroquois, the hunters saw no deer; the farmer’s crops withered; and the water dried up. The Iroquois came up with an idea. They thought that if they sacrificed most of their food to the gods, and they prayed to the gods that their life would return to normal, it would. While they were carrying out their idea, the gods said, “You have done good now. Your hunters shall see more deer than ever; your crops shall grow back thicker than ever; and your water will taste better than ever. This will be your reward, but be careful. If you are greedy ever again, you will have a worse punishment.”
The next day, the hunters saw extra deer; the farmers crops grew back thicker than ever; and the water tasted better than it ever has. The Iroquois were so jubilant, that they decided to hold a feast. While the feast was being prepared, the Iroquois decided to honor the gods with another sacrifice and rituals. A young boy decided that he could not wait until the feast to eat, so he stole some of the food. Others seeing the boy with the food did the same until all of the food was gone. The gods were angry that the Iroquois were so greedy that they created illness for the Iroquois.
The Iroquois, not knowing what medicine was, were getting sick constantly. They did not know how to cure themselves. They decided to sacrifice some of their food and perform rituals for the gods. The gods, seeing this, said the Iroquois, “You were greedy with our last gift, and so we gave you illness. But you have once again shown us that you know you were wrong, and so we give medicinal plants. These plants can help cure illnesses and get rid of some of the effects of the illnesses.” The Iroquois were once again jubilant and feasted that night. They were, however, careful to save some for the gods and perform the rituals.
