About Mars’ past, and Earth’s future.

Long ago, on a planet not too distant from the planet that we now call Earth, there was a society that was very much like our own. Their planet was at one time prosperous and full of life, much like the Earth. They had forests and oceans much like our own.

Their technology had become much more advanced than anything that we have ever seen on our planet thus far. But this was long before the Earth had ever been inhabited. Soon, however, the governments and corporations (as both entities were really one and the same) of this planet became power-hungry and corrupt. The natural resources of the planet were all but completely stripped away from this once-prosperous planet for corporate gain and the selfish wants and desires of the citizens of this planet. Fighting broke out as the resources began to run out, as there was not enough to go around. The fighting would soon escalate to full-fledged wars between nations.

As the wars continued, more destructive weapons were in constant development. It wasn’t long before the entire planet was completely decimated. Nuclear weapons were developed and nations went to war with each other, with no forethought as to the repercussions. Within years, everything was completely destroyed. The ground was left completely barren and the soil was scarred for the rest of eternity. The oceans were completely evaporated and the atmosphere began to dissipate. Nothing could ever be able to grow here again, and no living being would ever be able to survive. The only thing that remained were a few forlorn monuments left standing in the northern part of the planet and a red dust of the incinerated past coating the entirety of the surface.

Only a few lucky survivors were able to escape in space ships to find refuge on the next nearest planet to the sun and begin to rebuild their society, in hopes that history would not repeat itself.

One sentence ruined the whole thing: “Their technology had become much more advanced than anything that we have ever seen on our planet thus far.”

What are these technologies that are so advanced? How could a society capable of such technology fail to see the resource crisis coming? With such advanced technology, how did they fall into a crisis they must surely have seen. We see our own crisis coming, and much of our ongoing technological innovation is aimed at averting that crisis.

I would think it more plausible if the society advanced only to a point that would be analagous to post-war america of the 1950’s. Enough technology blow themselves up and to really extract the natural resourcses in a dangerously aggressive way and raise living standards so that all members can and do expect to live better than their parents did, but not enough technology to see the danger they create and not enough resources on the small planet to get the society through the boom to a point where they, as we do now, can really see the danger they have created and start to fix the things they broke.

Also, how does a society develop technologies more advanced than our own without first figuring out nuclear weapons? Much of the high technology we enjoy finds its roots in the development of nuclear weapons. The story makes it sound like the poeple of this planet developed technology more advanced than our own, then used up all the resources, and only then figured out nuclear weapons before blowing themselves up with them. Maybe there is another way to do things, but we didn’t get where we are without first figuring out the atomic structure and nuclear weapons are a direct result of that knowledge.
