The forest was haunted. It was said that anyone who passed the forest would be tortured or a worse fate awaited him.

I asked to be taken to the leader with who I had talked with earlier, so I was taken to him and told him that I wanted to take Kazuhiro home. The leader was also worried that we would tell everyone about the society. He made a deal with us. I would be able to take Kazuhiro home, but I couldn’t take his friends with me. I wouldn’t take his friends to make sure I kept my promise with the Christians. If we went back and told everyone about the Christians, then the other children that had went with Kazuhiro into the forest would starve to death or will be executed. The children would be raised as Christians and will with the Christians and they won’t be able to come to the village for the rest of their live. I left the forest and started my journey home.

I arrived home safely with my brother, everyone had been worried. My legs ached from carrying my brother on my shoulder. My father was angry because I had disobeyed him and I did get a slap on the face but I could see the relief on his face when he saw that Kazuhiro was safe. There was relief on everyone’s faces. They were all glad that I was back. I kept my promise with the Christians and didn’t tell anyone what actually happened. The parents of the other kids were crying and I couldn’t look at them in the eyes. I knew what I had done. I had sacrificed them. The guilt that I had left those kids there to starve was enough to haunt me because I knew that I wouldn’t be able to go back and save those kids. I knew that one day I would pay the price.

AFTERWARDS:

Takeo grew up to be a strong man; he never went into the forest again. He never told anyone about the Christians living in the forest. In Japan any Christian would be punished or killed. He did feel guilt for what he had done with the children. He died with a knife in his heart with the word “This is our revenge for killing us” written on it. Villagers said that it was the ghost from the forest and some said he was killed while he was writing this but the strange thing was the killer hadn’t destroyed the last peace of writing by Takeo which you have just finished reading.
