The story behind the hanging tree of Liverpool, Pennsylvania from a local resident.
I’ve lived locally to this road most of my life, although not in that particular town, but close enough to know the legend. I did a little research online to see what more I could find, but it turns out that I know more information than any of the websites had. So, since I’m a local, I figured I’d be able to share a more detailed description for you.
The road is actually Chubb Hollow Road, which all of the websites I found failed to mention.
Most other websites only tell part of what happened on this particular road. So to spare you from more research, I’ve compiled 3 paragraphs from other websites. This is all the information that was available, until now.

OK, here’s where my locality can tell you what’s true and what isn’t. There really was a man hung from a tree in the 1800’s who claimed to be innocent. Unfortunately, they hung him anyway. In fact, the tree is still there, grown out over the road. Although some started a rumor that the rope used to hang the man could still be found there, it’s of course long gone. Any rope from that long ago would have rotted away from the weather.
Since I know some of the people that have actually seen and heard things on that road, I can tell you their stories. Those kids that other websites claimed to have something land on the hoods of their cars are real. They were down on that road late on Halloween night when something jumped on the hood and roof of one of the cars, but they couldn’t see anything. But whatever it was actually left scratches on the paint. Being scared out of their mind of course, they jumped into their vehicles to drive away. But one car wouldn’t start for several tries. Unfortunetly, I couldn’t track down the pictures of the scratches.
But that seems to be a common part of the stories. Several people have claimed to be driving down the road, and not just on Halloween, when their vehicle will suddenly shut off.
One guy that my father knows was driving through one night when his truck and headlights shut off. No matter what he did, it wouldn’t start. He noticed a light coming towards him, and at first thought it was another car. But the closer it got, he realized it wasn’t even on the road. The only thing he could describe it as was a fire ball coming through the trees. He tried his truck again, and no luck with starting, he panicked and ran away. At the time there were no houses nearby, so he must have had to run a long way before being able to call someone. But he was so shook up by the experience that he wouldn’t go to retrieve his truck until the next day when it was daylight. (Not that I blame him!)
And one occurrence actually happened to my brother. He and his friends didn’t believe the stories and decided to go there late one night. But they only made it to the first corner in the road before the car spun out and the road disappeared. The thing is, my brother is not a liar and he’s not easily scared, so I believe him. He said that all they could see were trees no matter what direction they looked. The driver panicked and kept turning the car until they could finally see the road again, and drove away as quickly as possible. To this day, my brother still won’t go down that road. He’s even asked me to never go down there, even during the day. Which I certainly don’t plan on doing anyway!
The photo above is of Chubb Hollow Road. And that first corner in the photo is where my brother said the car spun out. Now from the looks of it, it would be impossible to lose the road when it’s so open like that unless something paranormal happened.
All the occurrences seem to take place at night, but some people won’t drive down it even in the day. Either way, I don’t want to have to add my own experience to the list, so I’m not going there. Whether you believe the stories or not, some things just can’t be rationally explained. But with that many people around here that claim the stories to be true, especially since I personally know a few of them, I believe the legend.
