Fred asks Nissa what she is going to do about the institution.

As Fred and Nissa were walking around the shopping center, Nissa decided that it would be the perfect time for her to tell him what she had been thinking. She said, “Fred, there is something I have to talk to you about. I was thinking, and I feel that the best thing for me to do would be to move away, far far away. That way, I can find another job, and maybe start over. I just don’t think I can do that here.” Fred could not believe what he was hearing.

Nissa knew that this would be drastic, but she felt that only Fred would understand. Fred put some thought into it, and said, “You know I support you with anything that you choose to do, but are you sure that moving away is going to give you what you want?” Nissa said, almost in a disappointed way, “It’s not that I want to move away, but I just can’t see it happening any other way.” Fred asked, “Why not?” Nissa said, “It’s just that, if I start looking for another job around here, I’m probably going to get fired from the institution. Then people are going to start all of these ugly rumors about me. By moving away, it will give me the last amount of dignity I could ever want.” Fred said, “Oh, I get it. So by moving away, people won’t necessarily assume that you’re disgusted with the institution or that you desperately need to find another job. Instead, they’ll just assume that there is some other reason as to why you have to go away.” She said, “Exactly. You see, you’re the only one who understands.”

Fred said, “I get that you don’t want people starting rumors about you, but why do you care so much what everyone else thinks? The way I see it, who cares what they think?” Nissa said, “In a certain sense, but by starting rumors about me, my reputation will be ruined. And then, if I decide to start my own business or something, I won’t have any students.” Fred said, “Well, now that you put it that way, it’s all starting to make sense.”

They continued to walk further, when Fred asked, “So are you sure that you want to do this?” Nissa looked up at him. Somehow, it seemed as if the answer to this one question would change her fate forever.
