The flash fiction continuation of the crew aboard the USS Constant.

April 20, 1961 Captain’s Log:
I stepped onto the deck of the USS Constant, feeling vaguely guilty. I knew I should be preparing more for the approaching alien attack, but I had delegated that duty to my second in command. I wanted nothing to do but wait and worry.
As I stood on the deck I realized that the entire crew was on duty and hard at work. Then I looked out into the ocean and had forgotten that it was so vast. Almost endless. Haunting and undiscovered.
One of the crew was working over something, then turned around and smiled a full smile at me. It was genuine and not out of respect for the position. I knew that he trusted me completely and over the years while under my command I had never let anyone down. Not once.
Until…
The aliens have terrified the world. My commanders thought waving peace with these aliens was going to prevent worldwide destruction. But that was a monumental mistake. It just gave the aliens a leg up. My job was to kick away the stool from beneath that leg up.
The sad thing about our situation is that I’ve dedicated my entire life, my entire career to peace. I wanted to live in a world of total peace. Share that peace with every country and every nation. I had no idea that what ever formed the nightmares in my head was changed drastically by these aliens. They gave a new meaning to fear. And now I fear that the only way we could come to peaceful terms is by starting a war.
A confused revelation…
