Once there was a little boy who did not want to go to school. Every day, his mother had to make him attend classes.
“You have to go to school,” his mother said. “Don’t you want to be a wise man when you grow up?”
“I want to be a wise man, Mother,” the boy answered,”but I learn very slowly. I don’t like to study.” Then he took his books and walked out of the house.
He passed by his neighbor’s house. The old woman was sitting by the door. She was holding a broken knitting needle in her left hand. Her right hand held a little file. She was rubbing the knitting needle with the file.
The boy stopped walking and asked, “Grandmother, why are you rubbing the knitting needle with the file?”
“My Son, I broke the end of my knitting needle, the old woman answered. “I cannot buy a new needle. I’m filing the needle so that I can finish the sweater I am knitting.”
The boy was quite for a moment. Then he said, “How long it will take you to repair the needle?”
“I don’t know,” answered the old woman. “I only Know I must have a needle. This is very slow work, but I will rub the needle every day until it is ready for use again.”
The boy walked on to school. He thought about the old woman. “Rubbing the knitting needle is very slow work,” he said to himself. “I learn very slowly. If I study hard every day, I will learn. I don’t know how long it will take me to become wise. I want to be a wise man, so I will study hard.”
The boy studied hard every day. When he grew up, he will become a wise man. He will become the wisest man in his country.
