What everyone once thought of as true, turned out to be false in the end.
“You would figure that, at the least, their bodies would turn up and give their parents some sort of peace.” Ariana said
“Paw-paw? Do you know what their names were? Maybe we could try and find some sort of records on them.” Alexius said
“Evan Mitchell Montgomery and Elana Maria Shelby. Odds are going to be that there aren’t going to be many, if any, records on them. They didn’t keep records, back then, like they do now.” Paw-paw stated truthfully
“Do they still use that house now?” Alexius asked
“No. The parties went on for about another thirty years. But every year the number of guests became fewer and fewer, until no one showed up. The house has been empty for some fifty years now. It’s rundown and condemned. No one is allowed in there because it’s way to dangerous.” Paw-paw said
“But people still go in there to see if they can see the ghosts of the past and present. People really would like to see this one couple’s disappearance solved.” Ariana said
“Yeah, especially since they were only thirteen years old at the time that they went missing.” Adam agreed
“Wouldn’t it be something if they were still alive? They would be about ninety-three now, right?” Alex asked
“If they were alive, could you imagine what they’ve seen? Imagine sitting back and for eighty years you listen to people talk about that one Halloween night and your disappearance. Could you imagine listening to those stories while you knew the whole time that it was you that they were talking about?” Alex questioned
“It’s kind of romantic, if you think about it. You run off with your beloved. People think that you’re a victim of some curse. While you go through living your life never telling anyone who you really are. It’s a tragic love story.” Ariana said
“Have the two of you tried looking for any type of records on these two people?” Alex asked
“Yes and no.” Paw-paw answered
“It can’t be yes and no. It’s either yes or no.” Alex said
“No, we really did not look for them. Yes, we did find information on them dating back seventy-three years ago.” Paw-paw explained
“Seventy-three years ago? Did you tell anybody about it?” Adam asked
“Who would we tell? We don’t know where their parents are. We don’t know where any of their families are. So who would we tell?” Me-maw questioned
“Good point. What did you find out?” Ariana asked
“The records on this couple started seventy-three years ago. It was said that they were married seven years before their first child came along. Their oldest child is seventy-three. Their oldest grand child is fifty-three, their oldest great grand child is thirty-three, while their four great great grand children are thirteen.” Me-maw said
“You put things like that and it sounds like the two of you.” Alex said
Me-maw and Paw-paw looked at each other as they held hands and said:
“It was us.”
“But your names aren’t Evan and Elana. Your names are Mitchell and Maria.” Alexius said
“When we ran off we started going by only our middle names so that no one would find us. It’s been eighty years since we’ve told anyone our first names.” Paw-paw said
“The legend said that you fell in love at the party.” Ariana pointed out
“That’s what was said. We actually fell in love when we were twelve. We vowed that, the Halloween after we turned thirteen, we would run off and never tell anyone anything.” Me-maw said
“That’s romantic.” Alexius said
“What about the house? Does this mean that it’s not haunted? And that the curse is really not a curse?” Adam asked
“That’s right. It’s all just for fun. But it’s nice to have myths, legends, and curses to believe in. All of this makes life a little more fun.” Paw-paw said as the kids drifted off to sleep
