Live the life of a peasant girl in China. Read this fictional narrative of a young girl’s life to get a taste of life in China long ago.

April 23, 1896

The crisp, warm spring air was brushing against my smooth face. I scanned my surroundings. Trees, little mud-covered stepping stones and thatched huts surrounded me. At first, when i was first born you see, this was a wondrous sight. But eventually, it wore down. I wake up every morning to see a brown pulp in front of my eyes. I scraped together yen to but bread for the morning, but i ended up short. I walked to the farmers hut, and asked for a small donation of corn. He refused, since business is hard here in China. Oh well, i guess it is another food less day here in china. I crawl back to my burlap blanket and rest.

I wake up, to that same brown pulp, of course, and walk downtown. People on horses are trotting down the mud roads. I scour the road for any money, being careful not to catch the attention of any sheriffs. I find 30 yen. I go to the bread store and ask for two slices. Then i proceed to walk toward the cheese store, and ask for their cheapest. The merchant hands me a day old slice of cheese. I wave at my fellow villagers and walk back to my blanket with a full stomach. A young girl stops by and asks me why I’m living on the dirt like this. I, painfully, respond with the cold, hard truth. She walks away. Yet another opportunity for a friend missed. Time to sleep…

I polish off the remains of my sandwich from yesterday, and take a walk along the river beside me. I bathe in it and rub myself with animal fat. I dry myself with my blanket and walk along it’s banks. I think of riches and a future, along with it a husband. I think of a great supply of food, just waiting to be handed to me. I know things will change, but for now, this will suffice. With a smirk on my face, i go downtown and explore the stores which it offers. I find a few dresses i would like, along with some shoes, but eventually the merchant kicks me out. I go to the local stable and pet the calm horses. I go back to my blanket, and sleep.

Its raining. I am allowed to sleep over at the farmer’s, though i am not allowed any food. Not to worry, kind locals offered me some bread, and i am full. I explore the many statuettes and figurines at his house. Alabaster and quartz. Very beautiful, yet cheap for those with a decent amount of money. Maybe i could get some statuettes later on? Maybe, but for now, i think i will test the farmer’s bed.
