Until a fatal plane crash in the Bahamas claimed the short life of Aaliyah Dana Haughton, she was already living a life full of accomplishments, such that most of us can only dream of. Aaliyah biography started when she was born in January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn but raised in Detroit, she lived life very purposefully.
It was as if she knew that her days were numbered and she had so much to accomplish with the little time she had. At an age where most teens are still deciding which direction to go in life, this beautiful young girl already found hers – singing, acting and modelling.
From being a prodigy of a television show, Star Search, to performing in a major concert with established stars, little Aaliyah was well on her way. When she was 12, she was already signed by two record labels – Jive Records and Blackground Records by her uncle Barry Hankerson.
It was then that she got to meet her mentor R. Kelly, who wrote most of her songs and produced her debut album – Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number. This album went double platinum after she sold a whooping 2 million copies.
Her fast paced life saw her marry R.Kelly at age 15 for a short period of time until the marriage was annulled on grounds of illegality. She then terminated her contract with Jive and signed with Atlantic Records.
Soon she began work with Missy Elliot and Timbaland on her second album – One in a Million. This again went double platinum in the US and Octal-platinum worldwide after selling for 2 and 8 million copies respectively, she was on fire! With the success of her singing career, movie directors came calling and she landed her first movie role, Romeo Must Die.
She also contributed to the picture’s soundtrack which had the single – Try Again. Again, this singles topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts only on airplay making her the first artist in history to do that.
She was nominated for a Grammy Award for the song. With the success of her debut film, she won and filmed her second role in another picture, ‘Queen of the Damned’, she was always working. On August 25, 2001, after earlier releasing her going-to-be last album, Aaliyah Dana Haughton alongside 8 other people were killed in a controversial plane crash in the Bahamas.
