A story about a frog on a lily pad. His problem is that he’s too little to do anything. Encouraged by others around him, he finally does what he says he can’t do – leap like a frog.
Spring had finally arrived!!! The sun’s warmth melted the icy leaves on the trees as the grass began to grow. The flower buds were blooming as they hid the bees making honey. The animals were awake from their sleep. Birds were singing in their nests as they watched the whipporwills playing hide and seek in the reeds. The pond was filled with joy as the frogs leaped at night and danced with the fish. It was the first day of Spring. Everyone was having fun except the littlest frog. His name is Sonny. He watched the other frogs leap from their lily pads. “I wish I could do that”, he said sadly. “Although I am a frog, but I am so little”. “Hi, Sonny”, said Tommy, the Turtle, who was passing by. “Why are you so sad today”? “He’s trying to leap”, laughed the Bonnie the Bullfrog. “But don’t frogs leap?” said Tommy. “Of course, they do”! exclaimed Ginny the Goose who was enjoying the water with her goslings. “Everybody knows frogs leap,” said the bullfrog. “Then why can’t Sonny leap?” said the goslings. “I don’t know,” mooed the cow. “Good morning,” said Leroy the grasshopper. As he flies in the air to a reed, Sonny begans to watch with enthusiasm. Sonny thought, “I can do like Leroy”. He starts with a jump then lands in the water with a Splash!!. All the other frogs begin to laugh. “He can’t leap”, “Ha, Ha, he can’t leap like us”. “Humpf,” said Ginny. “I guess you can’t leap”, come along children”, as they swam away.
Sonny got back on the lily pad with a sigh. “Oh, why bother,” ribbited Bonnie. “if you can’t do leap, then you can’t leap”. Everyone began to leave the pond, except Sonny. That afternoon, he dreamed that he was leaping. He was leaping everywhere. “Maybe someday,” sighed the littlest frog. “I want to play and leap like the others, but I can’t”. “All I do is make a big splash”. Beside the pond was a tall tree where Betsy the Bumble Bee was making honey. She heard Sonny splashing in the water. “I see you are trying to leap”, she buzzed. “Yes, ” said Sonny. “Maybe I can help” as she buzzes around him with her tiny wings. “I have wings that you cannot see as I fly, but it’s nature’s best”! “You can leap, Sonny”!! She was buzzing around and around. “It’s sooooo easy to fly”!!! “But to look at me, it doesn’t look like I can fly, but I can. ” “Don’t give up”!!! “You can do it”!!
Sonny watched with glee, as Betsy buzzed around him. “I know I can leap! he cried. He began to try again. His legs small, he took a hop, to the lily pad next to his. I did it! He exclaimed. Try again, said Betsy, I know you can do it. He jumped just a little. I can do it he said, I can do it. His legs jumping again to the next lily pad, Sonny could jump. I didn’t make a splash, Betsy!!! I jumped to the next lily pad. You jumped, said Betsy. Start to leap, 1, 2, 3, LEAP!!! Sonny took off. He began to leap. His legs went high off the lily pad. Sonny, the littlest frog, leaped. I leaped! I leaped!
The next day, Sonny so excited, that he shows everyone that he can leap. It was a fun day for everyone. All the animals began to cheer as they saw Sonny leaping and jumping around in the pond. All the frogs watched as Sonny leaped all day long. It was the happiest day ever for the littlest frog who learned who to leap.
