A lowly drummer boy finds his courage in the heat of battle to continue the leading his troops through the battle.
On the night before the battle of Shiloh, all was still and a lone drummer boy sat and waited for the morning to come and the battle to commence. This lone drummer boy sat and thought about what would happen the next day. Then before he knew it the night had passed into day and the troops were assembling for the battle. The drummer boy was scared because this would be his first battle and he would not carry anything into the battle to defend himself with. Then the command came for the troops to assemble and the drummer boy took his place at the head of the battle ready army and he started to beat out a fast-brisk pace and the army was off. Before long the army had arrived at the battlefield and the troops on both sides scrambled for cover to shield them. The drummer boy sought refuge behind a strong stone wall. Bullets whizzed by him and then the general gave the dreaded order to charge! The drummer boy when he heard that was terrified because he knew that he would have to lead those troops to what for many would be there deaths and he might jut be leading himself to his death.
Reluctantly the drummer boy emerged from behind his refuge to go lead the assembled troops. Then after what seemed like an eternity to the boy the command came down to start the charge! The boy started off at a quick run and beat a fast consistent beat on his drum. Then everything seemed to happen at once, the enemy unleashed a hailstorm of fire on the charging troops, the soldiers hit the enemy lines at a sprint and the soldiers engaged in bloody hand-to-hand combat. The drummer boy saw that he could do nothing but get in the way so he decided to simply hide again this time behind a small patch of trees. There he waited until the dust had settled and it became apparent that his side had won. He then emerged from his hiding place and joined the troops on there way back to camp. The drummer boy went on to win the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery at the battle of Shiloh and other battles.
