A father and his young son discover the body of a sailor lost at sea.

Ike Jones, a man in his sixties, wasted no time upon hearing Aubrey’s account of what he had seen that morning, and within minutes the water soaked corpse was onboard the small boat and covered with it’s sail. Ike stayed at the wharf where the boat was tied up, while Aubrey went to telegraph the district nurse and the Police officer stationed in the nearby settlement of Copper‘s Harbour. There was no doubt but that it was the remains of an American sailor as the man’s uniform was still intact. It took just over an  hour for the nurse and representative of the law to arrive and complete their reports. It fell to the Constable to notify authorities at the American Base in Argentia. Later that day a small Sea-Plane would arrive and take man’s remain back to the Base, from whence  it would ultimately be returned home to American soil.  Although the adults in Upper Arm Cove were very tight lipped around children, it remained the talk of the town for weeks and would be talked about in whispers for years to come. For Aubrey it was an event that would haunt his sleep for months, for the people of Newfoundland, it was but another chapter in a tragic story that would remain forever in the annals of their long and often fearsome battle with the elements, and of those who “go down to the sea in ships”.

Moses, I always enjoy your stories. You have a special flare for storytelling that puts your reader right in the middle of the tale.

Good story–even though we know it is going to be a tragedy from the beginning.

There are too many sad stories when there is war. Good description of feelings. Memories that never fade.
