A short story about a man I’ve encountered on a daily basis. It is based on a true story.
Everyday I walked to work, only to see a single man at the corner of Emerald and King Street. He was an odd man, with wild, unkempt hair and a beard that was usually braided in two, long braids. His clothes mismatched and he always had two different shoes on. The man saw me everyday, but never remembered me. However, he was always kind to me.
On this particular day, he was wearing a faded, black Led Zeppelin shirt with purple stained jeans. His left shoe was a high-top Converse and his right shoe was a scuffed Nike runner.
“You know the sky fell last nigh’,” he said upon sight of me.
“Oh really? Why do you say that?”
“An angel was dropped from heaven n’ she broke through the glass. She was sent to us by God. She wanna take us away. But I say to Hell wit’ her! I ain’t leavin’ the province of Canada!”
“Don’t you want to go to heaven?” I said.
“Who would wanna? All they do is walk around in their white dresses, dinin’ on food and drinkin’ wine. Who would wanna live a life like that? I like my freedom! I like my Canada!
“If I was to do anythin’, I would train to become a ghost. Then I would never leave! Then I would haunt Canada,” he hollered.
He began walking away from me so I took it as my chance to leave. I went to turn on King, but he grabbed my hand.
“Wooo! Dance wit’ me Charlotte!” He yelled. My name isn’t Charlotte but I didn’t dare to tell him. He started twirling around in the street. He waved his arms around in the air, swinging to music that could only be heard in his head. “Don’tcha love this song, darlin’?”
“Yes of course. What is it?” I asked.
“Back in Black of course! Only a amazing classic! How couldn’t ya know?” He asked me.
Before I could answer he grabbed me by my shoulders and shook me. The look in his eyes was bewilderment, as if he was mad that I didn’t know the song, but he quickly laughed and started dancing on Emerald Street.
